Opportunistic Hornets down Floydada in season opener

FLOYDADA — The Tulia Hornets showed their experience and capitalized when given opportunities to shut out the Floydada Whirlwinds 32-0 on Friday at Charles Tyer Stadium. Tulia scored in each quarter with their more diversified attack, and four Whirlwind turnovers helped Tulia’s cause.

“Tulia has a good ballclub. We did some good things and would turn right around do something not so good. It was youthful mistakes at the wrong times,” Floydada coach J.R. Compton said.

“We would move the ball at times, but we have got to improve on putting a string of plays together. The Hornets took advantage of the short field situations we gave them, and we did not make anything happen with the two interceptions that the Whirlwinds made in the first half,” Compton added.

Only once did Tulia have a sustained scoring drive of 80 yards in 10 plays in the second quarter that resulted in Koein Maeda getting in the end zone on a 10-yard burst up the middle. The other Tulia touchdowns came after taking possession at Floydada’s 41, 6, and 47 yard lines. The Hornets defense scored on a 35-yard pick six.

Tulia was far from perfect by committing nine penalties to Floydada’s two. The Whirlwinds had 56 offensive plays to the Hornets’ 48. The breakdowns in Floydada’s kicking game proved to be costly with a fumble on a kickoff return, and a pair of punt attempts that the Whirlwinds were unsuccessful in executing. Those three mistakes led to Tulia touchdowns.

“We have got to keep working on the basics of football, be more consistent. Our margin of error has got to be slim,” Compton emphasized.
