Consistency and trust is the Whirlwinds’ battle cry against New Home

90865

FLOYDADA –   The Floydada Whirlwinds are coming off of a much needed 34-8 win over the Smyer Bobcats last Friday.   This week the Whirlwinds (1-2) will continue their journey of improvement against the New Home Leopards (2-1) at Charles Tyer Stadium.

“We cleaned up a lot of things up against Smyer,  but the Whirlwinds need to continue to being more consistent in stringing positive plays together. They can do that by trusting in themselves and their important roll,  trust in their teammates of what they are attempting to accomplish,  and trust in the system.  We are heading in the right direction,  but not quite there yet.  We are playing hard and cannot let up,” said J.R. Compton in his preaching tone.

The Whirlwinds did show much improvement a week ago that included Andres Mendoza rushing for 165-yards and scoring four touchdowns,  Trace Glasscock passing for 235-yards and a pair of scores, the offense gaining 425 of total offense thanks to an improving offensive line,  Saul Reyes made big plays of  averaging 38-yards per punt return and scored on a crazy three-man relay reception with Aiden Trevino and Donovan Rocha for 66-yards,  linebacker Hagen Hinsley made four tackles behind the line of scrimmage to raise his season total to 9-TFL,  and linebacker Izaiah Alvarado continues to average a team leading 13-tackles each outing.   The entire defensive unit is getting better with each game played.

“New Home is a solid team.  They are coming off a 40-point win over previously undefeated Plains.   New Home runs a very similar offense in what we saw against Smyer.  The defense has some solid linebackers and a defensive line that really get after it,”  said Compton.

New Home has been making a living off its short passing game.  Sophomore quarterback Brazos Beck started the season by throwing five touchdowns before reportedly sustaining an injury.  Freshman Caleb Cook has filled in admirably with six scoring passes.  Six different receivers have scored led by senior Spencer Keys and Jackson Raines with three each. The Leopards had three running backs reach the end zone led by senior Alec Vitolas with three touchdowns   New Home appears to be a balanced team offensively and defensively  by out scoring their opponents 33-19.
