LUBBOCK — Lockney and Floydada’s high school bands both returned to Floyd County with their heads held high after receiving ‘Excellent’ marks at the 2021 UIL Region 16 Marching Contest Saturday at Lowrey Field in Lubbock.

The contest, featuring bands from 43 high schools across the Lubbock region, judges each school on their musicianship, precision and visual style.

Both Floydada’s Whirlwind Band and Lockney’s Longhorn Band received composite “2” or “Excellent” ratings for their performances.

Each band perfected their performances during the football season by marching at halftime on Friday nights and attending ‘invitational’ marching contests on the weekends prior to the official UIL competition. And while neither band will advance to the next round, both represented their schools proudly.

If you want to see the bands perform on their home fields on a Friday night you still have time this season. The Lockney band will next perform at Mitchell-Zimmerman Stadium on October 29 when the Longhorns face the Roscoe Plowboys. Floydada will be back at Charles Tyer Stadium one more Friday night, specifically Senior Night November 5 when they go up against the Hale Center Owls.
