Winds remain undefeated, Lady Winds edged in OT Tuesday

Roosevelt Lady Eagles – 37, Lady Winds – 33 OT

ACUFF, Texas — Floydada jumped out to an 11-point lead in the first quarter to see it eventually evaporate before falling to the Roosevelt Lady Eagles 37-33 in overtime on Tuesday at Eagle Gym. It was the Lady Winds’ first overtime contest of the season.

Roosevelt would chip away in the second and third quarters to tie the game at 21-21 at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter remained close and the game would remained tied 33-33 at end of regulation time. The Lady Eagles then blanked the Lady Winds 4-0 in the extra period for their first win of the season.

Senior Erin Trevino had 12 points, while sophomore Sierra Snowden and junior Lailah Burks brought down 11 and 10 rebounds respectively in a losing effort for Floydada. The Lady Winds out-rebounded Roosevelt 45-21. Floydada’s lackluster performance at the free throw line (8-19) turned out to be significant.

Whirlwinds – 78, Roosevelt Eagles – 47

ACUFF, Texas — The Floydada Whirlwinds (3-0) out-scored Roosevelt in all four quarters and cruised to their third-straight win by a 78-47 score over the 3A Eagles on Tuesday night at Eagle Gym.

Sophomores Abram Castillo of Floydada and Ethan Cervantes of Roosevelt got into an individual scoring dual with both ripping the nets for 28 points each. Castillo has now scored 20-plus points in all three Whirlwind wins and Tuesday’s 28 was a personal season high. Floydada had three more players score in double figures including junior Saul Reyes (13), freshman Ty Henderson (10), and freshman Braun Hobbs (10). Sophomore Aiden Trevino just missed the double-figure scoring with eight for the Winds.

The Whirlwinds won the rebound battle 24-15 led by Henderson’s six, Hobbs with four and Brandon Marquez with three rebounds. Floydada’s depth and quickness made a difference in the outcome.
