TAHOKA — Floydada Sophomore guard Abram Castillo has been on a scoring spree to start the 2021-22 basketball season by topping 20 points in every outing. Thursday at high noon he had his best “shoot-out” performance yet by pouring in 40 points in a first-round win over Lorenzo 83-52 at the Tahoka Tournament. The win keeps the Whirlwinds undefeated on the season at 4-0.

Castillo had 16 two-point goals, he was 5-6 at the free throw line, and had one 3-pointer to achieve the significant milestone of 40 points in a game. Castillo has been effective in transition for the Whirlwinds after the tenacious Floydada defense causes a turnover by the opponent. He is averaging 27.5 points per game.

The Whirlwinds team provided ample support in addition to the defensive efforts as junior Jayson Cooper contributed 14 points followed by freshman Bran Hobbs with 13. Seven Floydada players got in on the scoring act.

The Floydada boys will play Tahoka at 1:30 p.m. Friday on the championship side of the bracket.
