FLOYD COUNTY — The National Weather Service is forecasting high winds Friday afternoon, overnight and throughout the day Saturday, which could lead to elevated fire danger during that period.

The NWS office in Lubbock issued a Wind Advisory just before 3 p.m. Friday, which forecasts sustained winds from the north at 25 to 35 mph and gusts up to 50 mph behind a cold front that is moving into the area Friday afternoon. The advisory expires at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The weather service says that the windy conditions will bring blowing dust, low visibilities, difficult driving and possibly a few power outages, and will only weaken slightly overnight.

Humidity values as low as 12 percent on Friday, combined with the wind, will lead to critical fire weather conditions on Friday, the NWS says. The agency warns that fires can develop and spread rapidly under these conditions and discourages outdoor burning.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect until 6 p.m. Friday. Some elevated fire weather could persist beyond that timeframe with the high winds.
