Longhorns fall in district opener to New Deal on Tuesday

NEW DEAL – No. 12 state rated New Deal is off to a strong start in the District 4-2A boys race with two wins, the latest being Tuesday night when the Lions (17-5, 2-0) defeated the Lockney Longhorns (11-8, 0-1) by a 65-35 margin.

New Deal is the largest team in the district and the Lions have utilized their size in beating Floydada 64-45 and then Lockney.

The Lions did their damage in the first and third quarters by outscoring the Longhorns 18-7 in each of the odd-numbered stanzas. New Deal led 35-22 at halftime.

New Deal had three players score in the double figures led by Jason Brazzel’s 17, followed by Keegan Kirkland and Jyson Lacy with 12 each.

Lockney’s top scorer was Josh Barretoro with 13 and Austin Rodriguez had 11.
