Lockney power lifter qualifies for state meet

SUNDOWN – Lockney senior Damion Gonzales is making a return to the Texas High School Powerlifting Association (THSPA) State Meet again after winning the Region 1 title in the 114-pound class of Division 4 on Thursday. His overall lifts totaled 1,000 pounds.

Gonzales finished in fourth place at State in 2021 with a combined total of 885-pounds lifted in the three events of squat, bench press and dead lift He exceed that performance by 115-pounds at Region last week, which should make him a top contender at the State championships.

In the individual events Gonzales won the categories of squat with 410 pounds, and bench press at 230. He took second place in the dead lift at 360. The second place finisher in his class was Robert Noreiga of Kress with his overall lifts at 870 pounds.

The THSPA State Meet for Division 4 will be Friday, March 25 at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene. The top two finishers in each weight class at region qualify for State.

Lockney and Floydada both had other powerlifters finished in the top 10 at Region.
