FLOYD COUNTY – Between 250-400 acres of grassland and farmland burned Thursday afternoon in a grass fire along FM 54 near the McCoy Community.

The fire started around 3:30 p.m. just south of the farm-to-market road and just east of the intersection with FM 378.

Five fire departments, including Floydada, Petersburg, Ralls, Lockney and Dougherty all responded to the fire that appeared to follow the creek bed between Floyd County Roads 61 and 71.

There were no structures destroyed, and while Floyd County Sheriff’s deputies remained along FM 54 to slow traffic down as the fire burned nearby, the road remained open.
