FLOYDADA – Starting this fall, parents of Floydada CISD students will not have to face the challenge of having to buy their students’ school supplies.

On Tuesday evening the school board approved the district’s plan to use $75,000 in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds to pay for any supplies students in all grades might need.

“Teachers will come up with the supply list and we will provide them,” Superintendent Gilbert Trevino explained. “It’s a great thing for kids and families,” he added, pointing out that parents could easily spend nearly $100 on supplies per child.

The board also held a swearing-in for three members that were re-elected during Saturday’s elections. Eric Smith, Beverly Collins and Kay Brotherton all ran unopposed. Following their swearing-in the board took nominations for officers. Roger Hughes will retain his board chair, with Brotherton and Gracie Diaz remaining as Vice President and Secretary respectively.

Following a number of budgetary items Dr. Trevino announced district departures and recent hires. Kindergarten teacher Chandler Claxton was the only resignation. The following were approved as new hires:

Marc Puente – High School Teacher/Head Basketball Coach
Morgan Harris – Elementary Teacher
Detra Njenga – Elementary Teacher
Holly Carter – Speech Pathologist
Denisse Saenz – High School English
Alison Gales – Seventh Grade Math

Saenz has interned for the district this school year; she is coming to work for FCISD through Texas Tech University’s Rural “Grow Your Own” program.

The board also heard from Elementary Principal Monica Smith and Secondary Principal Dara Ware on their respective campuses Student Growth Summary Report. “Keep up the good work,” was the message from board member Eric Smith before adjourning.

The next board meeting will take place on June 9 at 7:00 p.m.
