FLOYDADA – A 62-mile-per-hour wind gust at 8:40 a.m. on Wednesday morning helped to push low clouds and fog out of the county.

Unfortunately, it also led to some minor damage around the area, including some uprooted trees and damage to roofs on a few homes outside of the city limits.

The wind was preceded by a little over a half-inch of rain for the first three days of June, when combined with rainfall from May 24 and 31, bringing our total for the past 30 days to over three inches of moisture – more than double the rainfall total for the previous six months.

For farmers, the rainfall came at a perfect time as the insurance deadline to plant cotton in Floyd County was June 5th. Ranchers are also realizing some of the benefits as many pastures are showing some signs of life as they break dormancy.

Floyd County remains in drought, though no longer in the D4 category – the deepest level of drought as defined by the Drought Monitor.
