FLOYDADA – “At some point, we’re going to have to reinstate it.” That was the reality for County Judge Marty Lucke Monday morning as he and Floyd County Commissioners discussed reinstating the county’s burn ban.

The ban, initially enacted in February and repealed early last week, is a deterrent for residents from starting open-pit fires to burn trash and other items due to dry conditions. With those dry conditions returning, Judge Lucke asked the commissioners to go reinstate on June 27, giving the land a little bit longer to dry out following recent rains, and giving residents another few days to burn off anything they need.

“Most of our people have common sense,” Lucke told the commissioners, who were initially reluctant to make the motion to approve.  But they did, unanimously voting to reinstate from the 27th until August 25.

When asked for clarification following the commissioners meeting, Judge Lucke said the ban will not include fireworks sales or usage of fireworks in the county during the July 4 holiday. It remains illegal to set off fireworks within the city limits of Lockney or Floydada.
