FLOYDADA – One of the items on Thursday night’s Floydada Collegiate ISD Board of Trustees meeting will be the approval of new teacher contracts. According to Athletic Director Todd Bandy, Eddie Walker III will be among those, hired as the new Whirlwinds basketball coach.

Bandy told the Floyd County Record on Monday morning that Walker signed the contract and has started moving to Floydada, but it will not be official until Thursday’s board meeting.

“He is coming to Floydada from Kermit where he led the Yellowjackets to the Area round of the boys basketball playoffs in 2022. Previously he led Rocksprings to the school’s first ever 1A State Tournament to the Semi-finals. He also led McCamey to a Region 1-2A tournament,” Bandy explained.

Rocksprings finished 24-3 in 2021, and McCamey was 19-11 in 2018 according to Max Preps. Max Preps also noted that Walker coached one year at each Kermit, Rocksprings and McCamey.

Bandy tells the Record Walker grew up in Winona, located between Tyler and Texarkana. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Texas College in Tyler. In addition to the boys basketball head coach, Walker will also be the new tennis coach and an assistant football coach. Adam Zepeda has been the tennis coach the last three years, and according to Bandy will now focus solely on boys golf in the basketball offseason.

With the approval of Walker, Floydada will now have all coaching vacancies filled. The Whirlwinds start football drills on Monday, August 1 for two-a-day conditioning drills with shorts, shirt and helmet.
