FLOYDADA – It’s officially budget season in Floyd County. That’s nowhere near as exciting as the start of football season, nor does it hold the thrill of opening day for the various hunting seasons, but it is important nonetheless.

On Monday County Commissioners held the first of multiple hearings to set the 2022-2023 fiscal year budget. County Judge Marty Lucke told commissioners they will face a larger budget in the upcoming year. The county faces capital expenses such as new equipment for precincts, new patrol units for the Sheriff’s office, and a proposed five percent salary increase for county employees.

Currently, there are a proposed 10 hearings to discuss the budget, but not all may happen. “If everything goes as planned, there are several of these meetings we can cancel,” Lucke told commissioners as he handed them a calendar with the proposed schedule. Most meetings are set for Monday mornings at 8:00 a.m., with the proposed tax rate set to be discussed on August 22. The first meeting in September will be held on Tuesday, September 6 due to Labor Day.

A special called meeting is currently set for September 16 at 8:00 a.m. for final line item adjustments.

The 2022-2023 county operating budget will take effect in October.
