Larry Dale Guthrie was born on June 18, 1947, to S.M. and Mary (Miller) Guthrie in Plainview, Texas.  His family moved to Floydada when he was in the 8th grade.  In 1967, Larry enlisted in the Marine Corp and served as a sniper in Vietnam, where he was severely wounded and sent home.  In 1969, Larry married the love of his life, Rhonda Kay Burns, and they celebrated their 53rd Anniversary this year.  Larry and Rhonda dated for six years before tying the knot.

Larry worked for City Auto Buick/Pontiac in downtown Floydada for 42 years as a Parts Manager until the dealership closed and for Western Equipment as a parts salesman until he retired.

Larry was on the Floydada Volunteer Fire Department for 52 years.  In all his years of service to his community as part of the fire department, he served as Fire Chief numerous times.  Larry was also a Panhandle Firemen and Fire Marshalls’ Association (PFFMA) member serving as President of the organization in 1992. and was voted as the Firefighter of the Year for 1992.  In May of 2021, Larry’s dedication to the fire service was recognized when the PFFMA gave him an Honorary Lifetime Membership Award.

Larry and Rhonda rode with the Pony Express for five years.  Larry loved ranching, working with his cows and Longhorn cattle, and riding his horses.  But most of all, he loved drag racing with his son, family, and friends and spending time with his daughter Shonda in the “man cave.”

Larry was preceded in death by his mother, father, and sister, Sue Clark of San Angelo.

Those left to cherish Larry’s memory are his wife, Rhonda; his daughter, Shonda Kay Guthrie; his son, Chad Dale Guthrie, and his wife Shana, all of Floydada; and one grandson, Monty Stambaugh of Dumas, Texas.

Memorial Donations may be made in Larry’s memory to the Floydada VFD, 114 W. Virginia, Floydada, Texas 79235.
