On Friday a Floyd County jury deliberated for two hours before giving Tara Hughes the sentence. She is required to serve more than 12 years before she will be eligible for parole.

Before the jury took up the sentencing they spent the morning hearing from members of Hughes’ family as character witnesses in her defense.

Hughes was found guilty Thursday afternoon of Knowingly and Intentionally causing Serious Bodily Injury to a Child in the July 16, 2019 death of her 17-month-old daughter, Haizlee Trevino.

Hughes faced anywhere from five years to life in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. She will not be required to pay any fines as part of the sentence.
