FLOYDADA – The Floydada man that served his community as a volunteer firefighter for more than 50 years was laid to rest Monday surrounded by hundreds of firefighters from across the state.

Larry Guthrie, former Floydada Volunteer Fire Department chief, died August 3 at the age of 75.

In addition to his service with the fire department, Guthrie also served as a past president of the Panhandle Firemen and Fire Marshalls’ Association. He was given a lifetime membership in the group in 2021.

Before Guthrie’s funeral service began Monday morning at First Baptist Church of Floydada, trucks from the region lined Main Street in four columns. At the end of the service, Guthrie’s flag draped casket was lifted by fellow Floydada volunteer firefighters onto the department’s pumper truck as a bagpiper played. The truck then led a procession that traveled from the church to the Floydada Cemetery.
