FARWELL – Whirlwinds Head Coach J.R. Compton and his staff knew going into Thursday night’s scrimmage with the Farwell Steers they would be facing a solid football program. Afterward Compton expressed optimism in what he saw in the Whirlwinds’ first outing against an opponent. “Realistically Farwell won the scrimmage by outscoring Floydada 3-0 in the 1’s vs 1’s. The Winds offense had some positive drives that we stopped ourselves with mistakes. The defense prevented them from making any big scoring plays and made Farwell earn it.”

“Ty Henderson did a good job at quarterback,” Compton added. “He is a sophomore, and still has things to learn. Our scheme was very basic in the first scrimmage. We were looking at ourselves this first scrimmage. We hope to open things up a little more against Quanah in the second scrimmage. Both Izaih Alvarado and Andres Mendoza (senior running backs) had some bright moments. The overall play by the defense as a group was encouraging highlighted by interceptions made by Sergio Valdez and Logan Smith.”

Compton still holds the team is weeks ahead of where they were in 2021. “The Whirlwinds right now are probably where we were at week three last season. There are positive things happening within our program. We are still a work in progress.”

The Whirlwinds continue to work towards the 2022 season opener at Ralls on August 26. Floydada will host the Quanah Indians in a scrimmage on Thursday, August 18 beginning at 5:00 p.m. Quanah is a 2A-II school that finished 2-9 in 2021. There will also be a ‘Meet the Whirlwinds’ on Friday night at 7. Both events will be at Charles Tyer Stadium.
