FLOYD COUNTY – It’s not exciting, it’s confusing to a number of people, but it’s necessary to keep our institutions running. It’s time for the county, cities and school districts to set their budgets for the upcoming fiscal year.

Each has been working toward their budgets for the past few weeks, but as they grow closer to a finalizing them, Floyd County residents are learning how much they will pay in taxes to help fund those budgets.

First, the school districts. On Monday evening Lockney ISD set a proposed rate of $1.199 per $100 of taxable property value, while Floydada is proposing a rate of $1.159. Both will hold additional meetings at the end of the month before the rates are adopted.

Next, the cities. In a budget workshop earlier this month the City of Lockney suggested a rate of $0.463 per $100 and will finalize it in a Tuesday morning council meeting. The City of Floydada will discuss their tax level at their own meeting Tuesday evening.

The County, with arguably the most complex budget, has held a series of discussions starting August 1. The rate, as it stands, is proposed at $0.656 per $100 valuation, and despite that being a lower number than 2021, it will raise more money for county coffers. County commissioners have already tentatively approved an 8.3 percent salary increase for county employees based upon inflation rates and available funds. The next budget meeting for the county is set for August 22.
