Two Floyd County players on A-J’s preseason Super Team

LUBBOCK – The Floydada Whirlwinds and Lockney Longhorns each had a player named by the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal to the Lone Star Varsity small-school football preseason Super Team on Sunday.

Floydada sophomore kicker Leo Mendoza was selected to the First Team as a specialty player. Mendoza was perfect in his kicking attempts as a freshman going 11-11 on extra points and 1-1 on field goals. His lone field goal was from 31-yards away. Mendoza did not take over the kicking responsibilities for Floydada until mid-season in the district opener.

Lockney senior tight end Jonathan Cienfuegos was named Honorable Mention on offense. Cienfuegos at 6’3” 180-pounds should be a top receiver in the Longhorns attack. Even though Cienfuegos was not mentioned on defense, he should equally be effective of rushing from the edge at defensive end.

The Longhorns and Whirlwinds will face numerous players this fall that were placed on the LSV Pre-Season Super Team:
