LUBBOCK, TX – One of the region’s deepest droughts is easing on the heels of widespread moisture over the weekend.
Rain began falling Saturday on the Southern High Plains, and 48 hours later, most of the region had a least an inch of rain in the gauge, with some areas receiving more than four inches.
The late-season rain, though welcome, is too little too late to help an area dealing with historical high abandonment of spring-planted crops like corn, cotton, and sorghum.
For the most part, farmers who have been irrigating have been able to shut off wells for the first time this season, but the drought has not been broken yet.
In Texas, July was the driest month on record and the fifth warmest according to climate records dating back to 1896.
