FLOYDADA – The Floyd County Memorial Library will soon have a new leader. A leader that won’t have to travel very far.

Monday morning Floyd County Commissioners hired current assistant librarian Rene Ortiz to replace Mary Jane Cisneros, who is running unopposed for the Floyd County District Clerk seat in the upcoming Nov. 8 election. Since she is running unopposed, Commissioners allowed Cisneros to begin training with current Clerk Patty Davenport last month.

Ortiz was one of eleven candidates interviewed by the court. He will begin his new role on October 1. The Floyd County Memorial Library operates branches in Floydada and Lockney.

During Monday’s hearing commissioners also approved the purchase of new body and in-car cameras for the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff Paul Raissez told the court the current system was in need of an upgrade due to its age and the amount of time it took away from his duties. “It’s always something with these (the current) cameras,” said Raissez, who mentioned the new equipment would be both more secure and easier to operate.

The money for the cameras will come from the current Sheriff’s Office budget, set to close at the end of the month. “If you’ve got the money in this current budget, I move we do it,” Commissioner Tanner Smith told the court after hearing Raissez’s proposal.

Commissioners will hold an additional meeting on Friday, September 16 to finalize billing for the 2022 budget year.
