FLOYD COUNTY, TX – In a matter of minutes on Sunday evening, the skies turned dark, and the wind bellowed as 75 mph winds blew through Floydada and Lockney.

Though visibilities across the region were limited throughout the day, when the high winds hit just after 6:00 pm, it dropped to zero, reminiscent of the Dust Bowl.

The unique weather event resulted from high winds feeding a massive storm system to the east, a prolonged drought (D3 to D4 across most of the area), and little to no crop cover in fields – again, due to drought.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the 70s through Wednesday, when another system may bring the opportunity for moisture and cooler temps (50s).
