FLOYD COUNTY, TX – The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office has released its crime report for May 2026, detailing incidents investigated by the Sheriff’s Office and the Floydada Police Department throughout the month.
The month began on May 1 when Floydada Police responded to a minor accident in the 200 block of North 2nd Street involving a 2014 Chevy Equinox and a 2020 gray Dodge Ram 2500. According to the report, the Dodge pickup attempted to change lanes unsafely and collided with the Equinox. No injuries were reported.
On May 4, Floydada Police responded to a family disturbance in the 300 block of West Jeffie Street. The complainant reported that her boyfriend had assaulted her but had left before officers arrived. The case remains under investigation.
On May 5, during a trial in the 110th District Court, a relative of a defendant allegedly made a threatening comment to the victim. Deputies were notified and began investigating the alleged retaliation.
Later that day, Floydada Police attempted to stop a maroon vehicle with New Mexico plates that was speeding through a school zone on Houston Street. The driver, Alfred Silva, 24, of Dimmit, Texas, refused to stop, leading officers on a short pursuit. The chase ended in the 300 block of West Missouri Street, where Silva was arrested for evading arrest in a motor vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, and driving while intoxicated with an open container.
On May 7, the Sheriff’s Office was notified that an individual required to register as a sex offender had moved to Lockney and was not in compliance with registration requirements. The case was submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
Also on May 7, the Sheriff’s Office received a report from the principal of Lockney High School regarding a student’s parent who allegedly forged a government document by signing it with the principal’s name.
On May 8th, the Floydada Police were called to the 400 block of North 1st Street following a report of an assault. The complainant stated that they were attacked while visiting the home of Kristy Yannis’s boyfriend, after Yannis entered the residence without permission. Yannis was subsequently arrested for assault causing bodily injury.
A complaint filed with the Sheriff’s Office on May 11 reported that someone was using a woman’s personal identification in Illinois while applying for assistance through the Texas Human Services Department.
On May 11th, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on US Hwy 70 in Lockney for speeding and pulled over a black Chevy Suburban. During the stop, the deputy discovered that the driver was unlicensed and was in the country illegally. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was notified. While inventorying the vehicle, the deputy found a handgun that had been reported stolen in Austin County. Jose Luis Munguia-Medina, 66, of Sealy, Texas, was arrested for theft of a firearm.
On May 13, Floydada Police were dispatched to the 900 block of West Jackson Street regarding a violation of a family protective order. The complainant also reported several personal items missing from the home. The case will be forwarded to the County Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
On May 14, a deputy responded to FM 2301 and County Road 38 following a report that a 2003 Ford Mustang had struck a deer. The driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
On May 15, deputies arrested Yvette Gonzales, 38, of Lockney, for trespassing on Lockney ISD property while attempting to enter the high school gymnasium during graduation.
On May 15, Floydada Police responded to the 100 block of North 1st Street regarding a female juvenile who had left home intoxicated after returning from a graduation party. The juvenile was located and returned to her parents’ custody.
On May 16, deputies responded to a reported burglary in the 600 block of 6th Street following a dispute with her husband. During the investigation, the caller, Victoria De La Cerda, 31, of Lockney, was arrested for making a false report to a peace officer.
Also on May 16, a deputy attempted to stop a blue Toyota Corolla for speeding. The driver refused to stop, prompting a pursuit with lights and sirens activated. Donald Garris, 20, of North Carolina, was arrested for evading arrest in a motor vehicle.
On May 17th, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a Chevy Silverado pickup due to expired registration. During the stop, the deputy discovered a THC vape. After requesting a K9 unit to perform an open-air sniff of the vehicle, K9 Reka indicated a positive alert. Subsequently, a search of the vehicle was conducted, revealing both cocaine and methamphetamine. Ricardo Vasquez Jr., 38, of Lockney, was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance (2Counts), Resisting Arrest, and Possession of a Controlled Substance PG2.
A deputy responded to a crash on May 19 involving a Toyota Tundra that struck a deer on U.S. Highway 70 near FM 2301. Neither the driver nor the passenger was injured in the
incident.
On May 20, a deputy stopped a Ford Expedition for erratic driving on U.S. Highway 70. During a consent search of the vehicle, a THC vape device was discovered. Passenger Angela Rodriguez, 36, of Plainview, claimed ownership of the device and was arrested for possession of a controlled substance PG2 under one gram.
On May 20th, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a motorcycle. It was discovered that the rider did not possess a valid motorcycle license. When questioned about narcotics, the rider admitted to having methamphetamine in his possession. Reinaldo Cuba Jr., 50, of Floydada, was arrested and charged with the manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance for quantities of 4 grams or more but less than 200 grams, as well as possession of a controlled substance (a third-degree felony) for quantities of 1 gram or more but less than 4 grams.
On May 21, the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a crash involving a semi-truck and a water truck on State Highway 207 near the caliche pit. According to the report, both vehicles were traveling north when the water truck began turning into the driveway. The semi-truck attempted to pass in a no-passing zone and collided with the water truck, causing the semi to overturn and block both travel lanes. Both drivers sustained minor injuries and were transported to area hospitals.
A deputy responded to a report of an injured dog on May 23 in the 500 block of Southwest 5th Street. The dog had suffered a severed tail, which appeared to have been injured on an object in the yard during a storm the previous night. A family member transported the dog for veterinary care while the homeowner was out of town.
On May 23rd, the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a sexual assault against a child that occurred while the complainant and her children were living in Floyd County. This case is currently under investigation.
Later that day, a deputy was dispatched to the 200 block of West Locust regarding unauthorized use of a credit card. The complainant reported that someone had gained access to at least three credit cards and used them without consent to make online purchases. The investigation remains ongoing.
On May 24th, the Floydada Police conducted a traffic stop on the Ralls Highway due to speeding. During the stop, the driver of a Ford F-250 fled the scene. The Floydada Police and Sheriff’s Deputies pursued the vehicle into Crosby County. The chase ended approximately three miles north of Ralls, where the driver exited the vehicle while armed with a handgun. After multiple attempts to convince the driver to drop the weapon, an exchange of gunfire occurred, resulting in the suspect being shot. The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene by Justice of the Peace Erma Casias. The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation
into the office involved shooting.
Also on May 24, Floydada Police and Floydada Fire responded to the 600 block of West Lee Street after a vehicle struck a natural gas meter. Atmos later determined the vehicle had struck an inactive gas line.
On May 25, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a silver Dodge Charger for speeding. While speaking with the driver, the deputy observed a THC vape pen in plain view. Stormie Wooten, 18, of Amarillo, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance PG2 under one gram.
Later that day, the Sheriff’s Office received a report of individuals trespassing overnight in the 2300 block of South FM 378. The complainant was unsure whether anything had been stolen and also reported suspicious activity around a vacant farmhouse.
On May 28, the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a crash involving a 2020 Kia Telluride that struck a deer after it ran onto the roadway. No injuries were reported.
On May 29th, the Floydada Police received a call from a complainant reporting that her brother had sold their mother’s Chevrolet Silverado pickup, located in the 800 block of South Main Street, for scrap without her mother’s consent. When the officer contacted the scrap yard, the vehicle had already been disposed of.
On May 30th, a deputy and the Lockney Fire Department responded to a call regarding an accident on US Highway 70, west of Lockney. Upon arrival, first responders discovered a Hispanic male, later identified as 57-year-old Samuel Casarez Junior from Pueblo, Colorado, trapped inside his 2016 Lexus 300. It appeared that the vehicle had veered off the roadway and collided with a tree. Casarez was transported to WJ Mangold Memorial Hospital with life- threatening injuries and was subsequently airlifted to UMC Lubbock by AeroCare. On May 31st, the Sheriff’s Office was notified that Casarez had succumbed to his injuries. A passerby first reported the crash at approximately 5:15 AM. It is believed that alcohol and other medical issues may have contributed to the crash.
The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office continue to investigate several of the incidents reported during the month.
