Esterline Mathis, age 91, of Lockney, passed away on August 29, 2021. Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 11, 2021 at the First Baptist Church in Lockney. Interment will follow at the Lockney Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Friday, September 10, 2021 in the Moore-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Lockney. Arrangements are under the personal care of Moore-Rose Funeral Home of Lockney.
On December 25, 1932, a daughter, Esterline Dorothy Taplin was born to the union of Mr. Doc Taplin and Mrs. Ella Brown Taplin of Bryant TX. She lived in Bryant TX until she met and married the love of her life, John Mathis Jr. They married in 1949 and lived in Itasca TX. They would later move to Lockney, TX in 1951. They were the proud parents of nine children. At an early age, she accepted Christ Jesus as her personal Savior. She gave faithfully of her time and was a devoted member of New Fellowship Church for as long as her health permitted. She was a homemaker for most of her life but she also did private sitting, and worked in the Lockney school cafeteria. She enjoyed sewing/quilting, canning, fishing, listening to old time gospel music and most of all her FAMILY. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and aunt. “Aunt Dee” was a strong outspoken woman who often expressed her opinions with a wonderful sense of humor. There was never a time that her family can remember her complaining about anything, she continued to go through life humbly. She was stern but loving. She was compassionate, uplifting, caring, strong, God-fearing, a teacher, and a voice… The true epitome of LOVE!
She leaves to cherish her memories: Flora Mae Brookins (Gilbert Brookins) – Johnny, Gilbert, Joann, Christiane, Timothy Lerline Baker (Bill Baker) – Chantal, Nathan, Natalie, Natasha, John Mathis III (Sharon)-Tonya, Deann Dorothy Mathis-Christopher, Shanna, Anthony, Darrell, Amy, Tamara, Michael Earl Mathis (Phyllis) – Earl Mathis Jr., Latoshia Elizabeth Dean (Ricardo)-Eric, Justin, Crystal, Christopher, Becky Mathis- Ashley, Brittany, Ruben Sally Grant (Virgil Grant) – Johnathan, Rex Mathis (Monica Mathis) – Rex Jr., Sadie, Corey. A host of great-grandkids, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by both her parents (Ella Ward and Doc Taplin) her stepfather (Johnny Ward), her husband, John Mathis Jr., Three sisters, (Irene Taplin, Lena Johnson, and Gertrude Ray), four brothers, (Samuel Taplin, Joe Taplin, James Arthur Flowers, and Ollie Taplin) a daughter (Becky Mathis) and a grandson (Vincent Anthony Mathis).
