FLOYDADA — Angelica Martinez always knew she wanted to be a mom. She also knew that, for her, working outside of the home while her babies are little was just not an option. That’s how IEDesignCo was born.
“I decided to start working from home after I had my second baby, just because I like to be with them while they’re newborn to 5 years old, until they’re ready to start school,” Martinez said. “I knew that I was going to have at least three kids and I couldn’t stay home for 10 years and not do anything.”
So, Martinez decided to turn a hobby into a business and hasn’t looked back since. Through IEDesignCo, she carries signature T-shirts, tumblers and boutique items. She also prints custom shirts and tumblers and even sells handicrafts from other local creators.
“I’ve always been creative, and in high school I did a lot of digital design. My cousin actually does T-shirts, and she got me into that. Then I started doing cups and tumblers and logos and it kind of just grew,” Martinez said.
And while there wasn’t a smash cake or balloons, Martinez celebrated the first birthday of the business by moving into a new physical location not far from downtown Floydada. Armed with her video baby monitor, manning the bijou shop adjacent to her home each day is a major step for the entrepreneur and her young business.
“It was nerve-racking. We’re young, just starting, so making a building for a business was kind of a big jump,” Martinez said. “I’ve been open for a whole year, just working out of my home, doing vendor events and things like that, but I wanted a more stable place because I was growing.”
The Floydada Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting for the business on Tuesday, and the shop is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 515 S. Wall St.
