PLAINS — The Lockney Longhorns will try to extend their two-game winning streak this Friday when they travel to Cowboys Stadium in Plains to take on the Cowboys (2-1). Lockney won back-to-back games at Mitchell-Zimmerman Stadium with strong second halves against the Boys Ranch Roughriders 31-14 and Floydada Whirlwinds 24-0.
Plains will attempt to get back on the winning side after losing to New Home 47-8 last week. Plains won their first games of the season over Tahoka 38-18 and Smyer 20-14.
Lockney (2-1) has developed into a balanced running attack led by the one-two punch by seniors Nathan Cineceros and Elias Alvarez averaging 81 and 72 yards per game respectively. The duo both went over 100 yards rushing individually last Friday against Boys Ranch. Senior Jesus Gonzales has provided some offensive spark by averaging 40 yards per game of combined rushing and receiving from his slotback position. Senior Pablo Morales has been back at quarterback and his four years of being Lockney’s starting signal-caller has been a big asset.
“Both of our offensive and defensive lines are gelling. Our kids are scrappy and are playing with a lot of energy,” said Lockney coach Cory McCombs. The Longhorns have showed a lot of tenacity in the fourth quarter the last two games with a determination to win.
Plains is led by sophomore quarterback Tyler Vargas, averaging 80 yards rushing and 78 yards passing in the two games he has played. Junior running back Marcos Vargos has been a workhorse by grinding out 144 yards rushing per game.
