FLOYDADA — There was nothing fancy about the Sundown Roughnecks’ (5-2, 2-0) game plan on Friday at Charles Tyer Stadium; they just got behind their big offensive line that averages 240 pounds per man to grind out a 46-7 win over the Floydada Whirlwinds in District 2-2A-I play.

Sundown scored a touchdown in each of their first seven possessions of the game and all of them were on the ground. With the victory, Sundown now possesses a four-game winning streak and is tied for first place in 2-2A-I with New Deal (both at 2-0). Floydada and Hale Center are tied for third place in the district standings with 1-1 records.

Senior running back E.J. Hernandez was the Sundown workhorse by rushing for 164 yards on 22 carries (7.4 average) and scored a season-high four touchdowns on runs of 3, 6, 4 and 34 yards. Junior dual-threat quarterback Hunter Tindol was a solid number two punch by running for 57 yards including a pair of scores, and passed 115 yards to give him a total of 172 all-purpose yards. Junior Koy Torres was the Roughnecks’ leading receiver with three catches for 90 yards.

Sundown jumped out a 13-0 lead in the first quarter. The Whirlwinds answered with a good looking 61-yard drive on eight plays that was finished off with an 11-yard touchdown run by junior running back Izaiah Alvarado. That reduced the Roughnecks’ margin to 13-7, but it was the closest Floydada would get as Sundown reeled off four more touchdowns in the second quarter to build up a 40-7 lead at halftime.

The Roughnecks were equally impressive on defense by holding the Whirlwinds to just 89 yards of total offense. Alvarado rushed for 44 yards and had 21 yards receiving to lead Floydada in both categories. Senior quarterback Trace Glasscock passed for 46 yards to four different receivers. Saul Reyes hauled in three passes for the most receptions for the Whirlwinds. Junior Jayson Cooper was Floydada’s leading tackler with 15 stops. The Whirlwinds’ linebacker corps of Alvarado, Hagen Hinsley, Davian Ramos and Aiden Trevino combined for 16 tackles.

The Whirlwinds will play their next two games on the road at Post this coming Friday, and at New Deal on October 29. Floydada will entertain Hale Center on the final regular season game on November 5 which could be an important game to decide a position for the state playoffs.
