SUDAN, Texas — The Floydada Whirlwinds (12-0) wrapped their final gift before the Christmas holiday with a convincing 81-27 win over the Sudan Hornets on Monday night. This shortly followed the Whirlwinds winning their second tournament championship of the season by going through the Whirlwind Classic and Tahoka Tournament undefeated the previous two weekends.
Floydada basketball teams will be idle until Dec. 28 when they host the Dimmitt Bobcats and Bobbies in a doubleheader at Whirlwind Gym. The Whirlwinds will be playing in the 62nd Annual Caprock ABC Holiday Classic in Lubbock on Dec. 29-31. The Lady Winds will not be competing in the Caprock Tourney.
Junior Luis Gonzalez scored a season-high 16 points to lead the Whirlwinds in the win over Sudan. Ty Henderson and Abran Castillo were the next-high scorers with 14, followed by Brett Brittain with a season-high 11.
The Whirlwinds outscored the Hornets by a double-digit margin every quarter in rolling to their most lopsided win of the season.
The Whirlwinds going to the Christmas break with an unblemished season record is a rarity. The 2005-06 Floydada boys team was 15-0 going into the Caprock Tourney, which is believed to be the best record at the holiday break in Whirlwind history. This was confirmed by former FCHS coach and administrator Charles Tyer when it occurred in 2005. (Tyer started as a Whirlwind coach in the late 1950s and was employed by FISD for close to 50 years.)
Anthony Carson is in his first year as a varsity head coach. Carson stepped into a Whirlwind basketball program that has won back-to-back district championships and three consecutive 20-plus winning seasons. Adam Zepeda coached those teams and has now moved over to his initial campaign with the Lady Winds.
