Wanell Huckabee Eubanks (Lubbock)
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Wanell (Nell) Eubanks on December 22, 2021. She passed peacefully in her sleep while in her home. She brought such joy and comfort to all she touched, and the world grew a little dimmer with her passing. The family of Wanell Eubanks will celebrate her life of 89 years at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers. Nell was born in Floydada, TX in 1932 and was the sixth of seven children to Alf and Sarah Huckabee. During her childhood, she had to take care of the chickens and she hated every moment of it. When she was 20 years old, she married W. H. (Dub) Eubanks, and with him, they had three girls. In 1963, the family moved to Richardson, TX, where she became active in the community. She helped with Campfire Girls, the Garden Club, and even started the Arapaho Methodist Church. No stranger to working, she threw herself into these activities with gusto. Her career began at Rainbow Donuts, waking up in the early hours to see her tasks completed. In the 1980s, she opened her own Hallmark Gift store. Her grandchildren still remember running up and down the aisles of that store, darting past colorful cards, delightful bobbles, and rolling soap balls down the aisles.
When that season of her life came to a close, Nell and Dub moved to the lake at Winnsboro, TX. Not one to stay idle for long, she opened an antique business on Winnsboro’s main street. Dub had the eye for a profitable piece at the antique auctions, but Nell was the brains behind the business, running it with her eldest daughter, Sue. Deciding to be closer to family, they moved to Van Alstyne and then to Lubbock, where they settled down and watched a lot of Hallmark Christmas movies.
Nell was fiercely devoted to her family: she was the type of mother to plop the children down at the breakfast table, present them with a full biscuit and gravy breakfast, then tackle their next need. And even if you could get her to sit for a bit, she’d spend her time picking up the crumbs off the table. A devout Christian woman, she believed in the power of compassion and generosity, often going above and beyond for those she loved.
Married for 69 years, she leaves behind her husband Dub; her daughter Sue and husband Pete; her daughter Julie and husband David, with grandchildren Matthew, Elizabeth, and Michael, and great-granddaughter Aspen; and daughter Ann with husband Steve, with grandchildren Justin, Candice, and Kristin, with great-grandchildren Hayden, Jackson, and Grace.
She was preceded in death by her father, Alpha Huckabee; mother, Sarah Huckabee; brother, Ernest Huckabee; and sisters, Gertrude Brand, Naomi Johnston, and Lois Karr.
