Longhorns are 1-1 in Wildcat Classic

LITTLEFIELD — The Lockney Longhorns (9-6) have split their first two games of the 30th Annual Wildcat Classic by falling to the host Littlefield Wildcats 71-36 on Monday night, then turning around early Tuesday morning at 8 to defeat the Tahoka Bulldogs 58-43.

Lockney will now play in the consolation finals on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

In game one, Littlefield jumped to a commanding 37-11 lead at halftime and then cruised to the 35-point win. The Longhorns had only player score in the double-figures as Austin Rodriguez had 10. The Wildcats were led by Tyrell Norman’s 17.

In game two, it was Lockney that had the hot start against Tahoka by taking a 25-11 lead after the first quarter led by Jonathan Cienfuegos scoring 12 in the opening stanza. The Longhorns possessed a 38-21 lead at halftime and held the Bulldogs at arm’s length the remainder of the game. Cienfuegos ended up as Lockney’s leading scorer with 16 after the big first quarter, followed by Josh Barretoro with 15 that included five 3s. Austin Rodriguez also had 15, and Nathan Hernandez contributed 11.

Lockney’s lineup is back to full strength after their two leading scorers of Rodriguez and Barretoro missed three games each due to ankle injuries.
