LUBBOCK — The Lubbock Christian Eagles (11-4) led by 6’6” post Asher Fleming took control in the fourth quarter to outscore the previously undefeated Floydada Whirlwinds (14-1 at the time) 26-11 in the final stanza to take a hard fought win 75-62 at Frenship’s Tiger Pit in the second day of the 62nd Annual Caprock ABC Holiday Classic.

The Whirlwinds held slim leads of 15-13 at end of first quarter, 36-35 at halftime, and 51-48 to start the fourth quarter. The initial three quarters were very tight with multiple lead exchanges and tied scores. Early in the final stanza the Whirlwinds made a couple of turnovers that turned into Eagles points. LCHS got hot offensively by shooting an impressive 10-of-14 at the free throw line, plus Fleming made three buckets while in the paint and drained a three-pointer outside the arc. Trew Farris was very efficient at the line going 5-of-6 and he made a pair of two-point field goals. At the same time the Whirlwinds missed some free throw opportunities by making just 1-of-5 attempts.

Floydada was not without its share of exciting plays lead by Abran Castillo’s game leading 31-points in a losing effort. Castillo made an impressive six 3-pointers, and equally effective with penetration drives, transition layups and short range jump shot shots. Braun Hobbs made solid contributions with his typical 14-points that included a pair of three-pointers. Floydada made 10 three-pointers as a team.

LCHS had a versatile offensive attack with four players scoring in the double-figures led by Fleming’s 17, Farris and Riley Schroeder had 14 each, while Carson Farnsley put in 13.
The LCHS-Floydada game ended near 3pm, and the Whirlwinds moved over to Lubbock Cooper in Woodrow to take on the Sundown Roughnecks in a Consolation bracket game that tipped off at 7:30pm. The results were much different than the midday contest as Floydada (15-1) returned to the win column in cruising past the Roughnecks 67-29.

Floydada will play for a Consolation Championship of the Caprock Classic at 1:30pm Friday against the winner of the Kingdom Prep (6-6) vs Denton Calvary (10-5) that tipped off at 9am Friday.
