Lady Horns get 2 convincing wins to end 2021 on a 10-game winning streak

LOCKNEY — When a team has an arsenal of shooters, tough defenders, handles the ball very well and protects home court, that team usually has a solid winning record. Example: The Lockney Lady Horns’ with a 10-game winning streak and an unblemished record at home.

The Lockney girls (18-4) finished the month of December with a 10-1 record. The only loss was in the opening round of the Tahoka Tournament on Dec. 4 to the Sterling City Eagles 57-49. Sterling City went on to defeat Floydada in overtime to win the Tahoka championship.

The Lady Horns won all aspects of the game in dominating the Petersburg Lady Buffs 71-29 on Thursday afternoon at Longhorn Gym, then turned around on Friday to have similar results in dominating the Anton Lady Bulldogs 60-25 on the road.

Against Petersburg, Lockney won the rebounding battle 46-33, made just eight turnovers, created 24 steals, executed 23 scoring assists, blocked 10 shots and deflected 25 passes.

Sophomore Adaliyah Jones had a season-high 19 points to lead Lockney in scoring against the Lady Buffs. Adri Villarreal and Senayda Bernal were next with 13 each. Gabriella Cervantes contributed 12 and Mariah Ascensio just missed the double figures with 9.

Haven Walker was the team’s top rebounder with 10 followed by Cervantes with eight and Ascensio with seven. Villarreal and Ascensio made recorded seven and six steals, respectively, plus the duo had six and five assists, respectively.

In the Anton win, Lockney was out-rebounded by 12, but the Lady Horns’ defense produced 22 more pass deflections and 17 more steals that the Lady Dogs. Villarreal was the leading scorer with 21 and made the most steals with eight. Jones had her second straight big game of scoring with 17 points. Cervantes was Lockney’s leading rebounder with sever. Bernal contributed eight points and made a team-high five assists.
