FLOYDADA — The Floydada Lady Winds (13-6) looked at adversity right in the eye by playing without three starters — Erin Trevino, Dani Zavala and Celese Wickware — plus head coach Adam Zepeda was not on the sidelines, but the Lady Winds found a way to defeat the Tahoka Lady Bulldogs 51-48 on Tuesday night at Whirlwind Gym.

Assistant coach Abby Sanders did a good job of filling in for Zepeda and the reserve players arose to the occasion in a game that went right to the final buzzer. Sophomore point guard Zay Santos had a big game with 18 points that included some clutch free throw shooting by going 7-of-9 at the line. Freshman Soriah Wickware had a strong game in the paint with 12. Lailah Burks was the top rebounder with 7, while Sierra Snowden and Wickware pulled down five apiece.

Floydada jumped out to a 19-4 first quarter lead, and held off Tahoka (9-10) who outscored the Lady Winds in next three frames. Kendra Garcia was Tahoka’s leading scorer with 19 in a losing effort.
