Lockney, Floydada to settle playoff seedings tonight

LOCKNEY – There have been a large number of high spirited games between the Floydada Whirlwinds and Lockney Longhorns during the last century in all kinds of sports. Tonight in Lockney will be the latest version when the two Floyd County rivals conclude their boys basketball regular season with a much coveted No. 2 seeding out of District 4-2A for the playoffs beginning the week of February 21.

Both teams have identical 4-3 records in district. For the season Floydada is 19-4 and Lockney stands at 15-10. Lockney won a nail-biter by a score of 67-64 on January 28 at Whirlwind Gym in their only meeting this season. Both teams play an aggressive style of defense and make things happen offensively with their team quickness.

Lockney is led by senior Austin Rodriguez scoring 15-ppg and 6’2” junior Jonathan Cienfuegos averaging 10-ppg. Senior Josh Barretoros (15-ppg) has yet to play since an ankle injury in the first meeting at Floydada, and uncertain if he will see action this Tuesday.

Floydada has a trio of players scoring in the double-figures starting with junior Abran Castillo (21-ppg), freshman Braun Hobbs (13-pgg) and junior Jayson Cooper (10-ppg).
