LITTLEFIELD – The Floydada Whirlwinds (22-5) season was stopped on Tuesday night at Wildcat Gym by the Farwell Steers (24-7) with a 72-59 loss in the Bi-District playoff.
The Whirlwinds got off to a good start with leads of 16-10 after the first quarter and held a 30-26 advantage at halftime. The Steers then controlled the second half by outscoring Floydada by 17 the remainder of the way.
Floydada junior point guard Abran Castillo capped off a great season by being the game’s highest scorer with 28-points in a losing effort. Castillo averaged just over 20-ppg this year. Sophomore Aiden Trevino and freshman Braun Hobbs both contributed eight points each. Trevino led the Whirlwinds in rebounding with eight.
Farwell was led by senior Greyson Waldrup’s 21-points and seven rebounds, followed by junior Leo Nunez with 14-points and six rebounds. Senior Juan Gaxiola made the double-figures with 12.
Floydada accomplished a lot this season by starting off the season 14-0 before suffering their first defeat in the Caprock Holiday Classic where they won a Consolation Championship. The Whirlwinds also won a pair of invitational tournament titles at Tahoka and the Whirlwind Classic. Floydada was the runner-up to District Champion New Deal (25-5) in the 4-2A race. All of the starting five are underclassmen and create a strong foundation next season.
Farwell will now advance to the Area round to play the Gruver Greyhounds (23-8). Gruver beat Shamrock 77-57 in thei Bi-District contest.
