FLOYDADA – What started off as a way to help out a family friend turned into a community event that netted $1,011 for a couple who lost their Floydada home last month.

Catarino Ramirez and Magdalena Hernandez’s home in the 300 block of West Kentucky was ravaged by fire on February 13. Their car was also destroyed.

Whirlwind Nutrition’s Yelitza Serrato credits her father with the idea to start the fundraiser. “He’s Dad’s good friend” Serrato said of Ramirez. “My dad decided to raffle off the bull first, then we set up the silent auction.”

The auction included items such as jewelry and gift certificates from local businesses, netting $511. The raffle was for a Corriente bull and raised $500. Jessie Delgado won the bull during a drawing Saturday afternoon.

A previous GoFundMe fundraiser for Ramirez and Hernandez by relatives also raised over $1,000 for the couple.
