FLOYDADA – In 2021 the Floydada Lady Winds took all-comers in waltzing to the District 3-2A softball championship with a perfect 14-0 record. Floydada will start its march towards another district title when they face off with the New Deal Lady Lions on Tuesday at Lady Winds Field beginning at 1pm.
The Lady Winds bring a 14-2-1 record into district play having played a non-district schedule predominantly of schools in 3A and 4A classifications. The only losses have been to 4A Levelland and 3A Coahoma.
Floydada has seven regular starters from last season’s team that finished 25-2-1 and in the third round of the playoffs (Region Quarterfinals). The Lady Winds have the pieces to put together a similar season in 2022.
When you talk softball or baseball, pitching is usually a beginning topic of a contending team. Floydada is definitely strong in this category with ace pitcher Erin Trevino. Trevino was an all-state player a year ago as a junior when she won 25-games and recorded an impressive 222-strikeouts. She is off to solid start in her senior season season with a 13-1 record, .366-ERA, and 83-strikeouts.
Floydada has some depth in pitching with fellow senior Clari Delafuente and a pair of sophomores Carissa Fernandez and Analise Perez. This trio has had some appearances in scrimmages, non-district games and in junior varsity games.
Defensively, the Lady Winds are very strong up the middle as good ballclubs need to be. Trevino in the circle, seniors Marissa Obregon at catcher, Delafuente at short stop and Kailee Sanchez at second base. The outfield is anchored by sophomore Fernandez in centerfield, an all-state player in 2021. Right and left field have seen various combinations with Jaycee Caudle and Kirsten Pyle alternating in left field, plus Soriah Wickware and Kaley Garza seeing playing time in right field. The remainder of the infield has both Analise Perez and Garza playing first base, while Perez and Celese Wickware have been used at third base.
Floydada is coached by Armando Morales, who is in his 13th season of heading up the Lady Winds softball program.
All Lady Winds softball games are broadcast on KFLP 900 AM and simulcast on 98.5 FM
