NEW DEAL – The New Deal Lions opened up defense of their 2021 3-2A district title and eventual state baseball championship by winning a pair of games against the Floydada Whirlwinds in both teams’ first weekly series. The Lions won 13-1 on Tuesday, followed by a 16-6 victory on Saturday.
New Deal (6-3, 2-0) had two big innings of scoring eight runs in the third inning, and another burst of six runs in the fifth frame. The Lions were led by Noah Rodriguez going 3-4 at the plate with two RBI, and Jacob Gutierrez was 2-4 with four RBI. The Lions were real aggressive on the base paths with 11-stolen bases.
Floydada (3-7, 0-2) had eight base hits which equaled the amount of New Deal. The Whirlwinds were able to score in four innings with three runs in the third frame being the most productive. Javier Santos had a two run triple for the Winds biggest hit of the game. Andres Mendoza had multiple hits of going 2-4.
