LOCKNEY – With the adoption of a resolution Tuesday morning to conduct their Mayoral election with the help of the Floyd County Clerk, the City of Lockney put the final piece of the May 7 municipal election puzzle into place.

The mayor’s seat is up for grabs after current Mayor Michael DeLeon decided not to seek reelection. Aaron Wilson and Ricardo Basaldua are both vying for the seat. Wilson currently serves as mayor pro-tem.

The mayor’s race is the only one contest among the five entities involved in the election. Lockney and Floydada’s school boards both have members who ran unopposed for reelection and were able to cancel their parts. The City of Floydada also had no opposition for their city council members seeking their next terms, but the city will be voting yes or no to extend the current city sales and use tax for street maintenance. The current quarter of a cent per $100 tax is set to expire in June. The tax is collected from sales within the city for road painting and striping, pothole repair and street cleaning.

For the county’s part, there are two state constitutional amendments on the ballot. Both deal with homestead exemptions for property taxes the state collects and can be read in full below.

Voting will take place at the Floyd County Courthouse Annex and Lockney’s First United Methodist Church on May 7. Early voting for the election will begin April 25 at 8:00 a.m. and must include two days where polls are open for 12 hours.
