FLOYDADA – One of the biggest highlights for many children is putting on the baseball or softball uniform for the first time, and numerous years to follow on Opening Day. The Floydada Youth Baseball Association, aka Little League, will have 300-players participating the Opening Ceremonies at Noon Saturday at the Little League softball field on Crockett Street.
“We have 27-teams playing in our summer baseball and softball program that includes teams from Floydada, Silverton and Valley under our Little League Charter. Those teams are broken down in
T-ball baseball; 7 and 8 year Coach Pitch baseball and softball; 9 and 10 year old baseball and softball; 11 and 12 year old baseball and softball; and finally 13 and 14 year old baseball and softball,” explained league president Lance McHam.
“All of these teams with the exception of T-Ball will play other area towns in league games. Those towns include Petersburg, Hale Center, Abernathy, Idalou, Slaton, Crosbyton and Post. This will vary from age to age if the Floydada league teams play all of these towns,” McHam went to say.
There will be a few T-ball and baseball games on Saturday after the Opening Ceremonies at their respective fields. At that time, the infamous chant of “Play Ball” by the umpire will be heard for another three months of youth baseball and softball.
In 2021, Floydada had a pair of softball teams advance in the Little League playoff system. The 14-and-under team went to the West Texas State (third round) in Abilene, while and 12-and-under bowed out at the Section I tourney (second round) in Childress. Both of those teams won the Tri-City Tournament and the District before going on to Sectional and State. They both were undefeated until the mid-teens of games before suffering a pair of losses to eliminate them.
