FLOYDADA – Over the last four years the Floydada Lady Winds have been one of the most successful high school softball programs in any classification across the South Plains with more than 80-wins including a 7-3 record in the UIL playoffs.
The Diamond Dusters summer travelling team coached by Gilbert Trevino and Eddie Sanchez have played a big part in laying the foundation in girls softball in Floydada. The duo coached these girls for close to 10-years and handed them over to Lady Winds Coach Armando Morales with a strong understanding of the game.
The Diamond Dusters camp will be Tuesday, June 14 through Thursday, June 16 at the new Lady Winds softball field on Whirlwind Way.
The camp will be divided into two daily sessions: ages 7-11 from 5:30 to 7pm; ages 12-15 from 7:15 to 8:45pm. “We are excited about offering this camp for the girls softball program. The camp will stress fundamentals of throwing, fielding, base running, hitting, and bunting. There will be one day of the camp we will spend in the indoor hitting facility to enhance their hitting skills, “ explained Gilbert Trevino.
A big core of the Lady Winds team that finished with a 34-4 record and in the Region 1-2A semifinals, will be helping the younger players. Those players include pitcher Erin Trevino, catcher Marissa Obregon, first baseman Analise Perez, second baseman Kailee Sanchez, shortstop Clarissa Delafuente, third baseman Celeste Wickware and outfield Dani Zavala. This group will be able to cover every position of softball.
In the previous years, the Diamond Dusters camp has not only involved local players from Floydada, but has attracted young athletes from Lockney, Ralls and Petersburg. “Floydada has now established a winning program in softball, and we want to keep the tradition and interest going in Lady Winds softball,” Trevino added.
