FLOYDADA – Monday, July 11 was another big day for Floydada Collegiate High School’s softball program with pitcher Erin Trevino and shortstop Clarissa Delafuente signing National Letter of Intents to play the game they love at the next level in college. Trevino signed on with the Sul Ross State University Lobos in Alpine, Texas and Delafuente inked her letter with the Oklahoma Panhandle State University Aggies in Goodwell, Oklahoma.

The signings took place in the FCHS library with a good gathering of families, friends and school administrators in attendance.

“I really liked the community of Alpine and my chances to play. I intend to pitch, but I feel I can play other positions in the infield and outfield,” Trevino noted. She plans on majoring in biology. Trevino was the Valedictorian of FCHS Class of 2022. Her multi-sport success in softball and basketball was appealing to Sul Ross coach Troy Canaba. Trevino was the district 3-2A MVP and the Lubbock A-J Player of the Year on the Lone Star Varsity Super Team in softball, and the 3-2A Defensive MVP in basketball. Trevino had outstanding numbers in softball with 60-wins, 530-strikeouts, five no- hitters and double-digit one-hitters while obtaining 30-wins in her senior season and 25 victories as a junior.

“I liked the school very much where I plan on studying dental hygiene or business,” explained Delafuente. This time a year ago Delafuente’s chances of playing athletics again were doubtful with a serious knee injury in the last basketball game of her junior season in 2021. But the positive attitude of Delafuente helped her persevere through rehab and close out her Lady Winds career with a stellar season at shortstop and running the base paths in the lead-off position of the lineup. Delafuente was described as the ‘sparkplug’ of the Lady Winds this past season.

Delafuente was selected as the 3-2A Offensive Player of the Year, and named Honorable Mention on the A-J’s Super Team in softball. Delafuente led the Lady Winds with 34-stolen bases and was second on the squad of scoring 61-runs. Her speed and aggressive play are definitely her calling cards.

It was also learned on Monday evening that Lady Winds catcher Marissa Obregon will also be playing for Oklahoma Panhandle State. Obregon had previously signed with Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, but they agreed to letting her play closer to home in Oklahoma after the Aggies made her an offer.

With the signings of Trevino to Sul Ross, Delafuente and Obregon to Oklahoma Panhandle State and Kailee Sanchez to Frank Phillips Junior College shows just how talented the Lady Winds softball program was in the 2021 and 2022 seasons that accumulated 57-wins, two district championships and winning seven gold glove trophies in the state playoffs.
