FLOYD COUNTY – The Lockney Longhorns hit the field when the clock hit midnight Monday morning at Mitchell Zimmerman stadium. It was a balmy 84 degrees and more than 100 fans, parents and fellow students had gathered at the stadium to watch the Longhorns run through light drills.

The scene will repeat itself across the state Monday as August 1 is the official start of fall sports and activities practice in Texas. In Floyd County that means the Floydada Whirlwinds football team and both high school bands will also be getting underway.

The Whirlwinds have opted for a more traditional practice Monday evening, while the bands are split through the day. Floydada’s full band will begin at 1:00 p.m. while Lockney’s band will meet together for the first time at 7:00 p.m.

Monday’s high temperature is expected to flirt with 100 degrees. Both football teams are restricted to practicing in t-shirts and helmets until August 8.
