FLOYDADA – The Floydada Whirlwinds were victorious on Homecoming Friday night, beating the Smyer Bobcats 42-18 to go up 3-0 on the season.

The Winds began the scoring in the second quarter, with Saul Reyes intercepting a pass to cross into the end zone. They would put another score on the board when Andres Mendoza took a short run and Leo Mendoza scored an extra point, taking a 13-0 lead into halftime.

Andres Mendoza would open the third with a 48-yard run and Izaiah Alvarado would have a 13-yard quarterback keeper to end the third with another 14 points.

The final quarter highlights include Alvarado connecting with Aiden Trevino for a 71-yard touchdown run and Andres Mendoza getting another six points with a short run, followed by a two-point conversion run from Reyes.

The Winds ended the night with 381 yards of offense, with the overwhelming majority coming from 212 rushing yards by Andres Mendoza.

Leo Mendoza was four for five on the night, a marked improvement that coach J.R. Compton said would be needed as the team moved toward district.

Up next for the Whirlwinds, the New Home Leopards on the road next Friday night.
