HALE CENTER – The Floydada Whirlwinds started the 4th Quarter with a touchdown, and were gaining momentum on a deep drive late in the quarter when they were called for a fumble that ended their chances Friday night.

The Hale Center Owls were able to force four Whirlwind turnovers, but were only able to score 13 points in their victory.

The Whirlwinds’ top play came by a Izaiah Alvarado to Saul Reyes touchdown pass with a Leo Mendoza extra point to tie the game at 7, but the Owls scored two minutes later, missing the extra point to end the scoring at 13-7.

A last-ditch comeback by the Whirlwinds was intercepted by the Owls with less than :02 left. After the game Coach J.R. Compton called the loss unfortunate but says he told the players “The true mark of a champion is how you rise when you fall.”

The Whirlwinds have a bye week coming up before opening district play at home against the Sundown Roughnecks on October 7.
