FLOYDADA – “Overall, it’s been fun getting to where we’re at.” Floyd County Judge Marty Lucke is proud of his commissioners and county staff for how they have grown county coffers over the past few years, “It takes a team.”

Tuesday morning Lucke gave commissioners and the gathered crowd an update on how the county is doing with its investments, and he had reason to be in good spirits from the report. Based on the county’s current investment portfolio, the county has just over $870,000 across four accounts, or roughly seven weeks of operating cash in those accounts alone. Factoring in all other expenses, liabilities and available money, the county has a surplus of $1.6 Million over the 2022-2023 budget. That security means the County could weather many financial storms. “We could operate for the whole year without taking in another penny,” Lucke said, thankful to be in the position despite the unlikely scenario.

Lucke and Treasurer Lori Morales are the county’s two investment officers.

During Tuesday’s meeting Commissioners also received gift baskets from Floyd County 4H Club officers as a thank you for supporting their mission. Each student stood and introduced themselves and named their role while handing over the presents.

Other items the county approved were the sale of a used vehicle-mounted RADAR unit to the Crosby County Sheriff’s Office. The unit was recently replaced by new equipment. Sheriff Paul Raissez told the court when Crosby County learned his department would be replacing three units their sheriff contacted him to see if the county would sell one to them. Commissioners unanimously approved the sale.

Commissioners also approved the cost of training the County Clerk’s office on new voting machines that will be put into use for the November 2022 election. Election judges and Clerk Ginger Morgan’s staff were recently trained on the equipment, which will be rolled out for the first day of early voting on October 24.
