WASHINGTON, DC – A potential rail strike looms at a second labor union that failed to approve an agreement with the nation’s freight railroads.

The Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen (BRS) joined the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division of the Teamsters Union (BMWED), and now there’s growing concern that the four remaining unions representing more than 75 percent of the unionized rail employees affected by these contract negotiations will also vote “no.”

The risk of a rail strike could be crippling to the economy as the Association of American Railroads suggests the impact at up to $2 billion per day.

At this point, the divide is not over wages or healthcare insurance, rather, it’s about paid sick leave for unionized rail workers, which doesn’t currently exist yet is available to more than 75 percent of the rest of the U.S. workforce.
