FLOYDADA – It’s a technicality, but a serious and important one when it comes to election law. On Monday afternoon Floyd County Commissioners canvassed the results from the November 8 election.

The count, which started at 1:04 p.m. and was done in seven minutes, consisted of one commissioner (David Martinez) reading the results of the election while another (Clint Bigham) officially recorded them. Commissioners Nathan Johnson and Tanner Smith, along with Judge Marty Lucke and County Clerk Ginger Morgan sat and listened as the tallies were counted.

There were a large number of unopposed local races, and as such their numbers needn’t been counted. Lucke, Morgan, Martinez and Bigham, along with Treasurer Lori Morales and Justice of the Peace for Precincts 1 and 4 Tali Jackson were all re-elected to their seats unopposed. New District Clerk Mary Jane Cisneros and Justice of the Peace for Precincts 2 and 3 Darrell Rasco also were declared winners without having their numbers counted.

Lucke asked Morgan about that change. “This year, once you won the primary and you had no opponent (in the general election), you were declared elected,” Morgan explained of the new rule from the Secretary of State’s office. “I guess that’s going to be the way from now on?” mused Lucke. “We’re not sure,” Morgan said, saying state officials had not said if it will become a permanent change.

Ultimately, the results were accepted on a unanimous 5-0 vote. To see the full Floyd County election results, visit VoteTexas.gov
