LOCKNEY, TX – Sometimes an unfortunate event opens the door for something better, and for Floyd County that could be The Old Fashioned Grocery store here.
After Lowe’s closed the doors on the only grocery store in Lockney, the community effectively became a “food desert.”
USDA defines such a place as “having at least 33 percent or 500 people of a census tract’s population in a rural area living 10 miles from a large grocery store or supermarket.” Lockney is 16 miles from the nearest grocery store in Plainview.
A group of community-minded citizens, however, are changing that.
Led, in part, by Carl Hartman and two other families, the independent and locally-owned store reopened on Saturday.
He explained that the store continues to add more items to the shelves but is already providing a good variety of local fresh fruits and vegetables.
Old Fashioned Grocery is located at 211 North Main Street in Lockney and is open from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
